In the relevant music lexica Josef Matthias Hauer is portrayed as a little-known atonalist who throughout his life vigorously maintained that he, not Schoenberg, had been the first to develop the method of twelve-tone composition. Interestingly, however, the two composers produced entirely different results. CPO have now recorded the principal symphonic works from Hauer's three compositional periods (in surround sound), and what you will hear in this representative sampling is a music conveying itself with a surprising sensuousness, even with a touch of romanticism, in spite of its atonal technique. Hauer's method was highly scientific and analytical and he set himself the highest ambitions: "I recognize only the great, consummate, cosmic, eternally immutable absolute music, the true harmony of the spheres, the holiest [...]." Hauer's music deserves a fair hearing. Violinist Thomas Christian has been described as "a fine soloist" by 'Classics Today'.
