The Saxon music director Johann Gottlieb Naumann has only recently been rediscovered. With his twenty-five stage works and numerous sacred compositions for the Dresden court chapel, he was arguably Dresden's most important musical personality of his time.
The oratorio La Betulia liberata (The Liberation of Betulia) was one of his last major works. It was premiered publicly after his death, an unusual fact considering that in the eighteenth century major oratorios as a rule were written for very specific occasions.
The work includes grand choral scenes and a great number of recitatives accompanied by the orchestra, often seamlessly joined to the instrumental sections. The result is a dramatic and captivating new discovery.
